FROM THE PASTOR
“I find it hard to avoid offending guilty men, for there is no way of avoiding it but by our silence or their patience; and silent we cannot be because of God’s command, and patient they cannot be because of their guilt.”
That is a quote from Martin Luther. It is one of the little sayings that help me get through life as an interim pastor. Other ‘one-liners’ keep me sane and focused. Some of them are from scripture, some from the catechism, some from my father, some I have picked up not knowing from where. I suppose someone could make sense out of these but I just want to share a few so you have an idea where I am coming from.
“The church exists for those who are not in it yet.”
That saying helps me look at any congregation with the eyes of a stranger. Is it a welcoming place, full of the love of Christ for the lost, lonely and loveless? Or is the building merely the clubhouse for the “local Luthurns?”
In the church, “When all is said and done, there is usually more said than done.” This one keeps me from getting too upset when church folk get together to talk about _______________ (fill in the blank: stewardship, evangelism, Bible study, community outreach, etc., etc.) and nothing happens but talk.
In Ecclesiastes 2:24 I have discovered a theme verse for my life: “There is nothing better for mortals than to eat and drink, and find enjoyment in their toil. This . . . is from the hand of God.” If you do not like your work, if you cannot stand your job, I feel sorry for you, but not much. Do what you enjoy doing and figure out a way to get people to pay you for doing it. If you cannot figure out how to do that, then look for some way of making the task (toil) more pleasant. As Mary Poppins said, “In every job to be done, there is an element of fun.”
I know that each of these sayings can be taken to an extreme or used totally out of context and can spoil instead of build up. However, taken in small doses each can prove to be a sanity saver. I am a bit reluctant to share my favorite because it is so dangerous and subject to mis-use. It comes from Moses, not the Old Testament Lawgiver, but Robert Moses, late of the Parks and Bridges Commission o f New York City. “It is easier to get forgiveness than permission.”
What are some of the aphorisms that guide you life? What are the sayings that have and continue to help you get through each day in this world God has given us?

PARISH NOTES
Ruth Circle
Ruth Circle met May 19, 2009 at Shepherd of the Valley, Howland facility. Sarah Wilson acted as hostess.
Final plans were made for the Strawberry Festival to be held June 16, 2009, from 5-7 PM in conjunction with the Rebekah Circle. The menu will be: Sloppy Joes, Hot Dogs, Potato Salad, Beans, Ice Cream, Cake, Strawberries, Hot & Cold Drinks. Bring a friend!! Proceeds from this project will go to St. Paul's general fund. This is also a Thrivent Financial for Lutherans sponsored activity.
A buffet luncheon was enjoyed by the group. June Burkhart was able to join us for our meeting. It was nice to see her.
Remember, all women are always welcome to join our group.
Faithfully, June Hutchison
Preliminary plans were discussed for the:
Strawberry Festival
Tuesday, June 16
“The beautiful springtime decorations and delicious lunch was served by Carol Hipple and
Margaret Kraynak. Thanks Carol and Margaret!”– June Hutchison
Rebekah Circle
Someone remarked that I always mention food in my articles. Well, have you ever heard of Lutheransgathering and not eating? Surely, that would be another denomination! The Boutique Sale was a success! Rebekah and Ruth Circles gave $1000 to the church’s general expense fund plus $250 from "Care Abounds in the Community" from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans®. Sometimes, we need to toot our own horn!
The next event, again with both Circles, will be the Strawberry Social, June 16, from 5:00 - 7:00 with the proceeds going to the church’s general expense fund. So, come out, eat, (remember, we're Lutherans) and have some fun and support the church.
We take a mini break in July with no meeting, but we meet for a dinner (again, the great importance of food ! ) and attend the KSU summer theater play. More info later.
Our August meeting will be a picnic (ok, I won't mention food anymore) at Georgia's home. Also more info later.
Graciously submitted, Georgia Mikola
Book Sale
Saturday, October 10
Please don't throw away any read books. Save! Save! Save!
Next week our hostesses will be Kay Paajanen and Karen Battin-Vitale.
See you at 6:00 on the 20th of April.
Georgia Mikola, Sec.
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! I am looking for a few people who are willing to deliver altar
flowers after church on Sunday. You will only have to deliver the flowers approximately three to four
times in a year. (The more people who volunteer, the fewer times you need to deliver!) Please
contact me at 330-373-6547 or e-mail me at bobnchere@neo.rr.com. - Chère Riedel
WEAR YOUR NAME TAG! Please remember to wear your name tag on Sunday morning.
Your tag identifies you as a member of St. Paul and will help Pastor Baumgardner learn your name.
The name tag also helps ushers and greeters to identify visitors. There are still people who do not
know each other in the congregation; and at times, we all could use a little help putting a name and
face together to find the right person! The proper place for your name tag is on your right shoulder.
From the Social Ministry Committee
The Social Ministry Committee will be collecting school supplies to be used locally. The requested items are: Elmer’s glue (bottles), Crayola crayons (24 Count), #2 pencils, block erasers and good safety scissors. Monetary donations will also be graciously accepted. The donations will take place from March through June. Any questions or donations should be directed to Karen Battin-Vitale.
